TAUNTON – On Sunday, Taunton’s brand new cafe sold 95 of its signature drink, “The Quinny”.
The Viveiroses estimated that about 300 people walked through the doors of 260 Broadway on that first day. The lines stretched from the cafe at the front of the building to the real estate office at the back.
“We knew there was a need,” Keith said. “We wanted a place where people say, ‘I want to sit here and hang out. “
The Society Coffee Bar aims for an upscale atmosphere with its black and white color scheme and the shiny chrome of the espresso machines. Keith said coffee lovers are already coming to test if their espresso is really legit. You can tell, he said, because they’ll be ordering pure espresso and keeping an eye on the barista’s technique.
The couple hired a coffee consultant who has trained the current staff and is on assignment to train new hires during the coffee’s first year, Keith said.
The café-bar also offers local “take-away” pastries, including Blondie Bakery in Warren, Rhode Island and Sam’s bakery in Fall River. Keith said he was at Blondie’s every morning at 4:45 am picking up the morning pastries.
Portuguese sandwiches are on the wishlist to be added soon.
The prices are a little higher than Dunkin ‘. A big latte at Dunkin ‘will set you back around $ 3.85 and up, depending on the options. A large latte at Starbucks starts at $ 4.45. A cafe latte at the company works at $ 5 and more depending on options.
There are more sophisticated options that cost more, like a Kentucky Straight Latte with Bourbon Caramel and Maple Syrup starting at $ 6.
Keith said they aimed to have something for everyone. Filter coffee, for example, costs $ 3 for a small one.
When the couple first bought the property, they hadn’t planned on coffee. They envisioned it as an office for their growing real estate agency, Real estate milestone in Westport. Milestone has 40 agents and has sold $ 335 million in real estate since launching four years ago, Keith said.
Keith, a former bodybuilder who will tell you he’s shorter than before, has said he would like the Society Coffee Bar for Taunton to be similar to the waterfront development in his native Fall River. It is in line with other upscale venues that have recently opened in Silver City such as Riverhouse Where Liberty & Union Ale House.
“The community has been fantastic,” said Keith.
Keith and Deb are both from Fall River and live in Norton now, but are no strangers to Taunton. The couple, who will soon turn 10, lived in Taunton for two years. Keith was a juvenile probation officer and Debra worked at Bristol County Savings Bank before getting into real estate.
