SALEM, Ohio — The Salem Rocketeria Cafe, 386 E. State St., will open Saturday, June 18 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The downtown shop serves Youngstown Coffee Co coffee and lattes. It’s also an arcade, snack bar, and live music venue.

The shop is owned by Gayle and Michael Johnston, both music lovers. Michael played in local bands in the 80s and 90s.

“We always wanted to have coffee and we knew we wanted to be in Salem,” Michael said.

“Once this building opened in Salem, we immediately acted on it.”

The Salem Rocketeria arcade has a retro feel. In addition to the many arcade games, there is also phosphorescent air hockey surrounded by black lights.

Customers who wish to bring food or organize events such as fantasy football drafts, game nights and art exhibitions can contact the Johnsons at 330 565 6909.

Gayle said customers are becoming regulars.

“It’s cool to see returning customers ordering their favorite drinks and enjoying the cool music and atmosphere,” she said. “Our specialty lattes are what people love the most. They have amazing flavor combinations and are named with rock ‘n’ roll in mind.

Gayle also created a special cold brew drink for the grand opening which she calls The Black Dog.
Jack and the Cadavers will perform at Salem Rocketeria on Friday at 6 p.m.

The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday).
